Communications and New Media Associate (DC)

Progressive States Network, along with its sister organization Progressive States Action, seeks a strong writer and dynamic communicator skilled in both traditional skilled in both traditional and online communications to provide support to our growing efforts to build national momentum behind — and bring national attention to — progressive state policy. Working closely with staff from both organizations, the Communications and New Media Associate will be a key member of the communications team, with primary responsibilities including contributing content to our websites and drafting press materials and other communications covering a wide range of issue areas — including immigration, tax and budget policy, health care, workers’ rights, and election reform. The Associate will also survey and track news coverage, engage in outreach to progressive state legislative communications staff across the nation, and assist with expanding our online advocacy and social media efforts. This position will be based in our Washington D.C. office.
 
Primary Tasks and Responsibilities

Writing and Editing

  • Write and edit press materials, including but not limited to press releases, talking points, op-eds, and letters to the editor covering a range of policy issue areas.
  • Write, research, and edit communications including but not limited to blog posts, articles, and email blasts on state policy and politics.


Outreach and Press Relations

  • Conduct outreach and build and maintain relationships with communications staff of progressive state legislators and state legislative caucuses — including building and maintaining a database of the above.
  • Survey and track news coverage of state policy and politics and identify ongoing opportunities for engagement.
  • Update and expand press lists of state and national media covering issues including health care, immigration, state tax and budget policy, workers’ rights, and more.


New Media and Online Technology

  • Assist with social media efforts and updating of content on Twitter and Facebook.
  • Support policy and communications staff in updating website content, writing and sending email blasts, and updating main organizational CRM database.
  • Assist in identifying ongoing opportunities for online advocacy efforts and reaching key online audiences and communities.

Desired Qualifications and Experience include
  • Excellent writing and editing skills and the ability to succinctly communicate complicated issues to a wide range of audiences.
  • Knowledgeable about and committed to advancing progressive policy across multiple issue areas.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and act independently while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for working collaboratively with a talented, creative, and passionateteam.
  • Comfortable with technologies (instant messaging, Google Docs, etc.) utilized to collaborate withcolleagues located in main New York offices as well as in our DC office.
  • Attention to detail and sense of humor.
     
Additional Desired Skillsets and Experience
  • Experience with CRM databases, social media, and online advocacy tools strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce, Salsa, and HTML preferred.
  • Experience in political campaigns or community organizing a plus.
  • Experience working with legislators and/or working within a legislative body a plus.

Immigration Policy Specialist (DC)

Progressive States Network (PSN) seeks to expand and grow our network of progressive state lawmakers who are in partnership with other national and state level organizations committed to building a bold, progressive movement for change-state by state.

Progressive States Network seeks a motivated, energetic individual to further develop and expand its critical work to advance progressive state policies with a particular focus on advancing comprehensive immigration reform. PSN’s work on state immigration policy aims to reframe the debate about newcomers and their contributions to states and our nation. Working closely with a team of policy specialists, the Immigration Policy Associate will play a key role in expanding the capacity and visibility of PSN’s immigration program. This position will be based in our Washington, D.C. office.

The Immigrat ion Policy Specialist will work directly with state legislators from across the country that are currently engaged and/or potentially interested in becoming involved in our work and legislative campaigns. The Policy Specialist will build, expand, and manage state legislative networks and relationships with strategic partners that intersect with the above policies. The Policy Specialist will work closely with these organizations and will need to be able to effectively coordinate, integrate and align policy initiatives, messaging, and strategic communications between our current and potential strategic partners and state legislators.

Core Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to

Perform outreach and build relationships with state legislators, legislative and committee staff, peer organizations, and constituent groups. These activities will expand and deepen the networks and partnerships of engaged individuals and groups committed to advancing common-sense policies that expand opportunity for all.

  • Develop and implement strategies to expand network of legislators engaged in progressive policy work.
  • Assist in coordinating and planning regular legislator strategy calls and project updates
  • Track state legislation, especially in targeted states, and stay abreast of state and national policy trends and developments, especially in targeted states, and identify national trends and key political and policy developments.
  • Staying abreast of state and national policy developments. Identify and communicate campaign and legislative best practices for advancing state policy initiatives
  • Perform issue research, summarize legislation, and analyze data. Write timely, informative, and practical updates, reviews, and other materials on these topics.
  • Communicating these updates to a diverse and growing network of state legislators and advocates at the state and national level
  • Assisting with producing policy and messaging materials in support of state-level and nationwide program priorities.
  • Work to build and deepen strategic partnerships with state and national advocates and community-based groups
  • Contribute to the expansion of PSN’s social media efforts Assist with developing, organizing and conducting trainings, mini-conferences, and state visits
  • Assist with materials used in preparing grant proposals and reports to funders
  • Cultivate relationships with legislators, their staffers, and targeted committee staff
  • Monitor state and local media coverage of relevant issues to inform and contribute to coverage of PSN’s work on state policy

Critical Qualifications and Experience Include

  • Experience in working in the field of immigration advocacy or immigration policy
  • Demonstrated ability to build and develop relationships with elected officials and strategic partners
  • Ability to develop and manage relationships with a broad cross-section of individuals, including legislators, national and state advocates, grassroots groups and research organizations
  • Experience coordinating and implementing policy, legislative and/or advocacy campaigns
  • Experience working for state legislators and within state legislatures is strongly preferred

Policy Specialist (DC/NY)

Progressive States Network (PSN) seeks to expand and grow our role as a central organizing force for progressive state lawmakers who are in partnership with other national and state level organizations committed to building a bold, progressive movement for change-state by state.

Progressive States Network seeks a motivated, energetic individual to further develop and expand its critical work to advance progressive state policies with a particular focus on economic security issues, state level government transparency initiatives, progressive revenue generations and advancing positive immigration reform. The Policy Specialist will work directly with state legislators from across the country that are currently engaged and/or potentially interested in becoming involved in our work and legislative campaigns. The Policy Specialist will build, expand, and manage state legislative networks and relationships with strategic partners that intersect with the above policies. The Policy Specialist will work closely with these organizations and will need to be able to effectively coordinate, integrate and align policy initiatives, messaging, and strategic communications between our current and potential strategic partners and state legislators. Core responsibilities will include outreach and relationship building with state legislators and strategic partners, tracking state legislation, staying abreast of state and national policy developments, communicating these updates to a diverse and growing network of state legislators and advocates at the state and national level, assisting with producing policy and messaging materials, and expanding PSN’s network of progressive state legislators committed to advancing common-sense policies that expand opportunity for all. This position is located in Washington D.C, but applicants in the New York City area will also be considered.

Progressive States Network (PSN) seeks recent law school graduates to host as fellows. Fellowships can include, but are not limited to those funded by Equal Justice Works, Open Society/Soros Foundation, and school specific fellowships.

PSN blends analysis and action to provide coordinated strategic support for a network of state legislators, their staffs and advocacy groups, in order to equip them with coherent logistical and strategic advocacy tools necessary for advancing key progressive economic and social policies. PSN is working to establish a cohesive network and support system for progressive legislators, while building a concerted movement dedicated to grassroots social and political change across the nation.
