PROGRESSIVE STATES ACTION STATEMENT ON NEW SENATE PROPOSAL FOR IMMIGRATION REFORMNew York, NY -- Progressive States Action and State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy (SLPIP) released the following statement today in response to the release of the new Senate draft proposal for comprehensive immigration reform:
"Progressive States Action and State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy appreciate the efforts of Rep. Gutierrez (D-IL), Sen. Menendez (D-NJ), Sen. Reid (D-NV), and Sen. Schumer (D-NY) for their proposals to fix our nation's broken immigration system. This commitment is particularly important given the patchwork of misguided and unconstitutional anti-immigrant bills now advancing in ten states and counting after the recent signing of Arizona's anti-immigrant law. We particularly applaud Senate leaders’ commitment to legalizing undocumented workers currently in the US, extending immediate work authorization and providing options for a path to citizenship; a renewed commitment to family-based immigration; a streamlined process for temporary workers to obtain permanent residency; and enhanced labor protections for immigrant workers."
State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy (SLPIP) is a group of state legislators from states around the nation who are committed to supporting policies at the state and federal level, including comprehensive immigration reform, that reflect our core values as a nation -- such as promoting basic democratic principles and recognizing the contributions of all communities.
