PROGRESSIVE STATES ACTION STATEMENT ON ARIZONA'S PASSAGE OF SB 1070

New York, NY — Today, Progressive States Action and State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy, a group of state legislators committed to supporting comprehensive immigration reform that reflects our core values as a nation, released the following statement in response to the passage of Arizona's State Bill 1070:

"Progressive States Action and State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy are deeply distressed by the passage of SB 1070 by the Arizona legislature. Passed by the State Senate and presented to Governor Brewer just three days ago, SB 1070 will hurt all Arizona residents. We urge all state legislators concerned with immigration policy to avoid following Arizona’s example, and call on Governor Brewer to veto the bill."

"This legislation will criminalize the state’s undocumented immigrant residents, eviscerate community policing, and give a green light to racially profile immigrants and Latinos regardless of their immigration status.  It will also decimate Arizona’s economy as immigrant families leave the state — and its racist politics — taking their much-needed tax revenue and economic contributions elsewhere.  Studies estimate this will cost the state a whopping $26.4 billion in lost economic activity.1  At a time when Arizona and many other states are grappling with large budget deficits, it makes no sense to enact shortsighted and punitive immigration policies that will breed fear in immigrant communities and result in a declining contribution to our economic recovery."

"Arizona's legislature has chosen an alarmist, xenophobic approach toward immigrants, which encourages racial profiling of the state’s Latino and immigrant residents and will likely spur costly lawsuits filed by US citizens and legal immigrants who may be swept up into an immigration dragnet.  State Senator Russell Pearce and his fellow conservatives’ determined efforts to blame immigrants for everything from the state’s economic woes to traffic accidents have clearly not served the state well:  Arizona faces some of the highest job loss in the nation; its budget deficit is $3 billion; and its housing market remains unstable."

"Progressive States Action and State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy believe that immigrant residents, including those who are undocumented, are critical to communities and state economies, and that state immigration policy should welcome these residents and their economic contributions to state and local tax bases and economies, not flush them into other states."

Arizona Assistant House Democratic Leader Kyrsten Sinema, an outspoken opponent of the bill, added:

"It's time Arizona actually works toward real solutions, not unconstitutional bills that force law enforcement to go after janitors and landscapers instead of the real problem — violent human, drug, weapon and sex traffickers that harm our cities and towns."

Progressive States Action and State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy believe that immigrant residents, including those who are undocumented, are critical to communities and state economies, and that state immigration policy should welcome these residents as engines of economic growth to state and local tax bases, not flush them into other states.
