Reframing the Immigration Debate:  The Rockridge Institute has a new paper, To Respect and Protect: Expanding our Discourse on Immigration, that emphasizes that progressives must change the "frame" on immigration from one of conservative fears to one emphasizing the global interdependence of working families in different countries and how a more progressive immigration policy, including ending the economic exploitation of "economic refugees" (the Rockridge term) will benefit our whole society.

Rising Inequality: In a state-by-state analysis of rising income inequality, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities finds that since the late 1990s, incomes of the bottom fifth of families has declined by 2.5% among the bottom fifth of families, even as the top fifth has seen a 9.1% increase.  In recent years, Mississippi, Alabama, New Mexico, Connecticut and Indiana have seen the greatest increases in income inequality.

With a new website, Truth in Immigration,  the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) has created a national clearinghouse for refuting immigration falsehoods that seeks to "refute legal and factual inaccuracies about immigrants and/or Latinos."

New reports by the Apollo Alliance -- Green Collar Jobs in America's Cities and its companion for states, Greener Pathways -- outline how policymakers can develop programs to train and employ people for the high wage careers in the new clean, green, energy efficient job sectors.  Both reports emphasize that clean energy jobs are a pathway both for environmental and economic rejuvenation of local communities.

In a major new report on transit, A Better Way to Go, the US PIRG Education Fund highlights the environmental, economic and quality-of-life gains that increased investments in public transit can yield. The report emphasizes that such investments can play a major role in reducing dependence on foreign oil and global warming emissions.

A new Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) report, The Decline in African-American Representation in Unions and Manufacturing, 1979-2007, details how the decline in manufacturing has disproportionately hurt African Americans, cutting them off from a rich source of well-paying, unionized jobs. Adding to the problem of declining manufacturing jobs has been the drop in unionization rates within remaining manufacturing jobs.

In a ground-breaking report, Getting Ahead or Losing Ground: Mobility in America, the Economic Mobility Project found that widening gaps in higher education between those coming from rich and poor families as well as disparities between white and minority children, are leading to a downturn in opportunities for the poorest families. Only 11 percent of children from the poorest families have earned college degrees in recent years, trapping most of them in the lowest income brackets in adulthood.
